La Double J’s installation inspired by the solar system created by Max Siedentopf showcased the brand’s new home collection ‘Solar’, featuring 36 pieces of porcelains with gold accents, hand blown Murano glassware and Como-printed Linens. Evoking the vibrant energy of the Mediterranean in spring, the Milan Design Week 2024 presentation, ‘Dancing Plates’ scenography hailed the season of rebirth and the dazzling power of the sun. With exquisite craftsmanship as a constant, meticulous attention to detail, and a vibrant use of colour, it reflected the values and creative enthusiasm of J.J. Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson mainly worked with alumni from the brand’s prestigious Craft Prize on his first-ever lighting installation at Milan Design Week. Staged at Palazzo Citterio in the heart of the Brera Design District, the presentation featured one-of-a-kind lighting designs from 24 artists who the brand has either worked with or supported in the past.

It’s been 10 years since Charlotte Macaux Perelman and Alexis Fabry first took over Hermès Maison as creative directors—so it was only fitting that the presentation of their latest collection this week should artfully blur the lines between past and present. Poltrona Frau (find more here) presents the Imagine collection, a dynamic showcase of creations that plunge into the depths of artistic inspiration. Embracing the boundless power of imagination, the renowned Italian brand presents a tribute to creativity’s limitless potential. Within the new collection and the many collaborations featured (including Draga & Aurel, Fornasetti and more), Poltrona Frau blurs the lines between art and design, pushing the boundaries of conventional furniture crafting.

Under the direction of designer Christophe Guberan, ECAL Bachelor students in Industrial Design have explored various options for borrowable items. Particularly relevant for temporary-use clothing, accessories, and furniture, this approach enabled the young designers to benefit from FREITAG’s expertise in circular economy, material upcycling, services, product development and disruptive innovation. In its eleventh installment, 5VIE Design Week (find more here) celebrates the convergence of designers, collectible design, exquisite craftsmanship, and innovative combinations of art and design, all within the historic core of Milan. Building upon last year’s Design for Good theme, which emphasized the growing importance of mutual care among humans, this year’s Unlimited Design Orchestra seeks to delve deeper into its essence. By drawing inspiration from musical elements, particularly orchestras, the event aims to underscore the intrinsic human and humanistic dimensions of design. This approach resonates with the cultural movement initiated by Francesco Petrarca in the latter half of the 14th century, which revitalized the concept of ‘studia humanitatis’ and placed humans at the forefront of all considerations, giving rise to Humanism. A favourite installation, and one that offered the perfect sanctuary from the lively city, was to be had at Emotions of the Sun by champagne house Veuve Clicquot—an enchanting space transporting the viewer on a sensory journey of textures and tones. A collaborative project with Magnum’s Steve McCurry, the exhibit featured artwork by a collective of photographers—Alex Webb, Newsha Tavakolian Trent Parke, Olivia Arthur, Lindokuhle Sobekwa, Cristina de Middel, Nanna Heitmann—selected for the way they capture the many shades of the human condition.

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile is a hub of experimentation and cross-pollination, a meeting point and a place for new opportunities to reflect on the world of design and planning. The 2024 edition will take place from 16th to 21st April 2024, in the Rho Fiera Milano spaces, as is traditional. As lullabies began to play over the speakers, a procession of models began circulating around the room as if sleepwalking, before being dressed by two mysterious attendants in a full Browne three-piece suit and tucking themselves into bed. Expect those to become a fashion editor favorite while jetting across the Atlantic to the European shows next season.
